The American Conservative (TAC) is a monthly (formerly biweekly) U.S. opinion magazine published by Ron Unz. Its first editor was Scott McConnell, his successors being Kara Hopkins and the present incumbent, Daniel McCarthy.
In general, TAC represents an anti-war and Old Right voice against the dominance of what it sees as a neoconservative media establishment. It also has ties with anti-war libertarians, although individual TAC columnists such as Stuart Reid and Robert Locke have been sharply critical of libertarianism. In 2009 Reihan Salam wrote that the publication had "gained a devoted following as a sharp critic of the conservative mainstream."
The magazine's editorial stance differs from most other "conservative" and "neoconservative" publications in its opposition to George W. Bush's interventionist foreign policy as well as his immigration and trade policies.
